“The Lumpy S. March”, for Drum Corps, Traditional Bus tune arranged by Sarah Houle, 2022.
“The Lumpy S. March” was written for the Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps out of St. Peter, Minnesota, and will be premiered at the inaugural Minnesota Original Music Fest in July, 2022.
The original tune, “Lumpy Shithead Farm”, is a traditional bus staple and is often sung to pass the time while traveling on the bus. In the first part of this two-part song, Corps members create rousing and creative stories of each others’ antics “on the farm”. The antics of each corps member may be accurate, fabled or just plain wishful thinking. The second part, always the same, laments the Corps members being unable to see due dim sight and loss of spectacles.
In “The Lumpy S. March”, the traditional bus tune is featured as a parade number. There is a little bit of oompa, a little bit of fanfare, some call and response and a flashing ending. Built into the arrangement is a repeat for a longer, concert performance.
