The Eclipse Self Instructor for Baritone Bass Clef by Paul deVille Published by Carl Fischer, New York, 1905.
Here, you’ll find my YouTube channel video catalogue with most of the exercises, etudes, studies and such found in this book. To make it more interesting, I have decided to play the music from this 116 year-old text on my 100 year-old Conn double-bell euphonium. This book, “The Eclipse”, was gifted to me by my employer and had belonged to his late father. The double-bell euphonium had also once belonged to my employer’s late father and is now being reunited with the book!
In these videos, I’ll be experimenting with transitioning from the large bell to the small bell throughout each exercise and focusing on the instrument’s intonation tendencies. Many of these old double-bell euphoniums come with some horrendous intonation issues. One of the best ways to try to overcome these issues is to go back to the basics (pick up a beginning book such as this cool, old one) and just go through the exercises slowly and deliberately, listening intently to each note you play. For someone who has played for 20+ years on a Yamaha 642-S professional euphonium, the intonation issues are VERY apparent, but are something that could be *mostly* overcome by just getting to know the horn.
