Two Sides

“Two Sides” by Sarah Houle, 2016, for Brass Quartet (Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba)

“Two Sides” depicts two completely separate events, related only by the composer’s viewpoint.

Movement 1, “To Battle Alone”, is for a waiting room, watching the seconds tick by, tension and uneasiness filling the air, alone in thought…and then, the call to battle. Alone. Cloaked by the scrim, no longer physically alone. The battle ensues, but your voice fades into the blackness beyond. Truly alone. And then it’s done.

Movement 2, “And to Hear It”, is for the other side of the scrim, the darkness. The subject enters and breathes heavily, tension silences the room…and then, the surreal sounds of a battle against no one begins and progresses and ends, fading into the darkness around.

  1. To Battle Alone…

2. …And to Hear It
