Come to the Mardi Gras

“Come to the Mardi Gras”, traditional, for NOLA Trio (Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba) arranged by Sarah Houle, 2021.

Ever since I first heard this fun tune played at the Maison Bourbon in New Orleans, it has been one of my favorites. It is such a fun, up-beat toe-tapper that has a great melody. The first time I heard it performed was by a female trumpet player, vocalist and band leader and she killed it.

Here is my version of the tune for NOLA Trio. The trumpet carries the melody at the beginning and at the end, and even though the parts are written out with some variation, more liberty can be taken to make the melody your own. Between both trumpet leads, I have given the trombone the melody. Here, the trombonist has a choice: either play or sing the melody, as I have included the lyrics. Other than that middle section, the trombone gets to play a tailgate style trombone part with lots of smears and glisses. I highly recommend listening to some good recordings of NOLA artists implementing this style of playing so you can get a good feel for it.
