Autumn Brass Off, script by Tom Leonhardt, music composed by Sarah Houle, 2017, for actors and brass quartet (Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba).
“Autumn Brass Off” was originally debuted at Sarah Houle’s 2017 original music recital after she was awarded a McKnight Artist grant through Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council. This lighthearted short play centers around a fun, musical competition between two neighboring towns that occurs yearly each autumn. This year, two finalists face off to conquer the trials of showmanship and love as they compete for the final prize at the Autumn Brass Off!
This is the introductory theme and narration for the short, musical skit entitled “Autumn Brass Off”. In this sample, Michelle Roche is narrating over a brass quartet consisting of Jessica Landsteiner (Trumpet) and Sarah Houle (Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba).
Cues 2 and 3 of Autumn Brass Off. In this sample, Michelle Roche is playing the parts of Elder #1 and Elder #2 (the white-haired curmudgeons) as they argue about whether or not Grace Shoemaker is to have a spot in the Autumn Brass Off ensemble. The lines of the elders are interjected with sound effects by the brass section: Jessica Landsteiner (Trumpet) and Sarah Houle (Trombone and Euphonium).
Cue 4 of Autumn Brass Off. In this sample, Michelle Roche is narrating over a brass quartet consisting of Jessica Landsteiner (Trumpet) and Sarah Houle (Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba).
Cue 5 Autumn Brass Off. In this sample, Michelle Roche is playing the characters of Pickleville Kid #1, Pickleville Kid #2 (Randy Marshall), and Pickleville Kid #3 (Ronny). Jessica Landsteiner (Trumpet) interjects with a short melodic snippet as Randy’s dad practices for the Autumn Brass Off off stage.
