About Sarah

Euphonium and trombone, performer, composer, arranger, educator, and nature enthusiast.

I play the Euphonium and Trombone, sometimes the Tuba and Trumpet, and am a largely self-taught composer. I began to write works for brass instruments while working on my undergrad in Music Performance because there really wasn’t much brass ensemble literature out there that used my main instrument, the euphonium. One of my original goals as a composer was to have “a euphonium in every piece”, though that turned out to be a very limiting goal. But it really is a great instrument, so I do like to write for it as much as possible!

Initially, I was heavily influenced by the NOLA Brass Band genre and wrote and arranged several pieces for 10-piece New Orleans Brass Band while I was working on my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music performance.

After taking one graduate level composition elective, I began turning my writing to brass chamber music (mostly quartets and quintets) with adapted instrumentation to include the euphonium as a voice.

Much of what I create is inspired or influenced by nature, but sometimes I will try to replicate general feelings or experiences into musical terms. I enjoy drawing and painting as occasional hobbies, as well as kayaking, camping and hiking, rockhounding, and gardening. I love delving into our natural world and learning about plants, insects and animals, rocks and geology and learning how to DIY. The Earth is our most beloved treasure, to be protected and enjoyed. I hope you’ll find much of what I do reflects that.
